Back injury led to a new career

Enterprise HQ member Edel Slawson started out as a district nurse, but a chronic back injury forced her to give up her career in 2003.

While seeking treatment for her own injury, she discovered the Bowen Technique - a muscular remedial therapy which led to the complete recovery from her back problems. Edel was so impressed that she decided to train as a practitioner of the technique together with her daughter Rachel.

The two women set up their own separate businesses, both running their practices from shared premises at Edel’s home.

During treatment of clients, Edel discovered that many patients suffered from other ailments, which were often a block to their recovery. Once she had made the connection between emotion and healing, she introduced EFT to the treatment portfolio, the Emotional Freedom Technique. This technique uses a tapping movement on the acupuncture points.

Each client is first assessed by Edel and then receives their own specific treatment using the Bowen Technique, Emotional Freedom techniques and Sound Healing. These treatments work by rebalancing and de-stressing the body, and allowing it to heal itself. Edel has found that the therapies can have long-term benefits to both mind and body.

“EFT is a simple tapping procedure, similar to acupuncture but without the needles. What makes it different from other therapies is that EFT addresses emotional issues as a likely cause of physical problems. The technique has been featured on GMTV, and was developed in the United States,” says Edel.

“EFT can help people overcome weight issues, phobias, and builds confidence to enhance sports performance and things like public speaking. It has been successful in helping people give up smoking and other addictions. I run a four-week weight-loss plan in conjunction with EFT and with classes to be attended.

“The Bowen Technique is a light touch massage, used for conditions such as frozen shoulder, back and neck problems, asthma, stress, sports injuries, infant colic, ADHD, autism, and many more problems. The gentle rolling moves can seem insignificant but they have a profound effect on the body.

“We also use sound healing, using our voice or instruments over the client to rebalance their energy system. It has been used with good effect on anxiety, stress and pain relief.”

Edel offers appointments in Copthorne and at the Wellbeing Holistic Therapy Centre at Coleham in Shrewsbury.
